Personal Injury/Motor Vehicle Accidents

Print This Page

Many automobile insurance policies cover acupuncture for treatment of soft tissue injury following a motor vehicle accident. Oriental Medicine can be a fabulous way to treat soft-tissue injury resulting from motor vehicle and other accidents.  A combination of acupuncture, cupping, electroacupuncture, Chinese herbs, and/or moxibustion can help to relieve your pain, decrease inflammation, improve your response to physical therapy, and improve healing time.

Most personal injury policies, including the bodily injury portion of most automobile policies, provide coverage for acupuncture services when “medically necessary”.  “Medically necessary” is typically defined by the insurance company, and can vary widely from company to company.  In most cases we’ve seen, acupuncture has been covered with minimal questioning for about 10 visits, especially if recommended by a physician.  After a particular threshold, often 10 visits but varying somewhat between companies, the insurance company may ask for an independent medical opinion to verify that continued treatment is appropriate.

If you would like to try acupuncture following an accident, we can verify coverage with your insurance company.  Please call us at (619)772-4002 to discuss whether Oriental medicine is right for you and whether your insurance will cover our services.
