“Everybody hopes for longevity, but nobody wants to be old. ” ~Liang Shiqiu
The ancient Chinese treasured health and vitality. Whole texts written by famous scholars presented treatises on how to live in a way which preserved the essence, and while peasants didn’t have the luxury to practice meditation, eat pure and seasonally appropriate food, drink the correct elixirs to balance their constitutions, and address minor symptoms before they became full-blown disease, the upper classes dedicated their lives to cultivating beauty and health. The purpose of the doctor was not to take care of the sick, but to help patients maintain vibrant health. They would certainly help if you DID become ill, but illness was seen as a failure of the doctor.
Most people seek out acupuncture because something hurts or they have an ailment which is not getting better under their physician’s care. But where acupuncture truly shines is as a PREVENTATIVE medicine. Your constitution is determined by your genetics, and it is influenced by your lifestyle choices. While it won’t change your genetics, acupuncture can help your body, mind, and spirit to absorb life’s bumps with a minimum of damage. With regular treatment along with attention to diet, exercise, and stress management it is possible to take control over your health and to flow into and through your later years with grace and minimal health issues.
If you are in your 20s or 30s, acupuncture can help you to feel your best. Regular facial acupuncture treatment can relieve the tension in your facial muscles which leads to wrinkles later in life. It can relieve the muscle and connective tissue tensions from old sports injuries, whiplashes, and other incidents which show up on the face as lines of tension and pain. Combined with constitutional treatment, acupuncture can reduce your risk of developing painful joints, digestive issues, high blood pressure, and other physical issues associated with aging.
In your 40s and 50s profound hormonal changes are experienced by both women and men. These changes affect mood, energy level, sleep cycles, digestion, and sex drive, and can leave you feeling frustrated and out of control in a no-longer familiar body. Acupuncture combined with herbal constitutional support and some diet changes can help level out the bumps and make the hormonal transition easier on you and your loved ones. Regular facial acupuncture can minimize the depth of facial lines, help to improve skin tone, and help you to feel beautiful inside and out as you gracefully navigate “the change”.
If you are in your 60s and beyond, regular acupuncture treatment can slow the degeneration of joints which results in arthritis, improve facial muscle tone reducing depth and visibility of wrinkles, and keep your body, mind, and spirit as stress-free and disease-free as possible.
At any age, acupuncture can help you to manage stress, maintain great digestion, sleep well, and recover from injuries. Facial acupuncture can help to reduce the severity of acne and other irritating skin conditions, and it MAY help to support collagen production, especially when combined with constitutional herbal support and regular facials. It can also be helpful as part of a comprehensive program to manage other facial conditions such as Bell’s palsy, trigeminal neuralgia, and decreased muscle function resulting from a stroke. back to top
Facial acupuncture uses fine needles on the face and body for a safe and effective way to improve the muscle and skin tone without drugs or surgery. Working with the meridians which supply “qi” to the body, the needles stimulate circulation to refresh the skin and muscles below. Muscle groups on the face are also addressed to improve muscle tone, lifting the face. For maximum effectiveness, facial acupuncture is incorporated into an overall health maintaining/balancing treatment using points on other parts of the body so your skin is refreshed from the inside out. back to top

While most people can benefit from Facial Acupuncture, there are a few people who should not receive this treatment:
Please be sure to talk to your practitioner if you are experiencing any of these situations. Although facial acupuncture may be inappropriate, there are other ways we can help you to look and feel your best. back to top
- People with uncontrolled high blood pressure
- Anyone who has had a migraine within the last 3 months
- Anyone who has had a seizure within the last 3 months
- People with hemophilia or other clotting disorders
- Facial acupuncture also should not be done during pregnancy, acute illness, or herpes outbreak
Although most people will see some changes from the first treatment, the average person will need 12-15 treatments for lasting results. People who are smokers, have chronic illnesses, or who have particularly saggy skin will typically need 20-24 treatments. In rare cases, two courses of treatment will be needed for lasting effect.
Treatments take approximately 30-75 minutes depending on how many facial areas are being addressed, and should be done two times per week. We recommend scheduling your full course of treatment in advance so you can plan your schedule around your appointments.
Following the course of treatment, maintenance care is needed to keep you looking and feeling your best. We recommend treatment every two weeks for the first two months, then once per month for as long as you would like to continue. You can always complete another course of treatment if new issues arise or during times of stress. back to top
At your first appointment, you’ll experience a full Chinese medicine evaluation which includes completing an intake form, talking about your medical and family history, and addressing any concerns you have. Your tongue and pulse will be observed, and a Chinese medicine diagnosis made if appropriate.
Following the intake and on future treatments you’ll be asked to wash your face, removing any make-up you’re wearing.
An herbal mask and warm compress will be placed on your face, and left while we take your pulse, assess your meridians, and place body needles to bring balance to the pulse and meridians.
The mask will be removed, and needles will be applied to your face to address the areas you have requested. Needles will be left for about 20 minutes while you relax.
The needles will be removed, and a toner will be applied to your face to close the pores, followed by a light moisturizer chosen for your skin type. This will complete your treatment.
The entire process will take between 30-75 minutes depending on how many areas of the face you need treated. back to top

After the first treatment, there is typically an increased glow to the complexion, the result of increased Qi and blood flow to the face. The face appears more “open”, there is increased clarity in the eyes, wrinkles start to lessen and the skin appears more toned. People may ask if you’ve been on vacation because you look so refreshed. A significant difference in appearance can be usually be seen between the 5th and 7th treatments. At this point you should begin to experience the following:
By the end of a series, the typical person should look and feel 5-15 years younger though these results may vary slightly depending upon how well you have taken care of yourself during the process. At this stage, maintenance care provides ongoing support within a normal process of aging. back to top
- More marked changes in wrinkles and skin tone
- A more pronounced sensation of relaxation and calm
- Lifting of the jowls, neck and eyes begins to become noticeable
- Constitutional issues like digestive complaints or sleep issues may have also improved
Facial acupuncture is non-invasive, less costly than surgical procedures, does not carry the risks of Botox, and is based on ancient Chinese wisdom related to longevity, beauty and balance.
